They were good. Very good, in fact.
So very obviously loving what they do - that alone was inspirational.
Was also interesting to go to what is basically a goth gig, dressed very un-goth-like - and to feel that I should recognise half the crowd, yet only know the people I went with.
I need to go to more gigs, I'd almost forgotten how much I can enjoy them. |

I would like to thank Melbourne for scheduling the beginning of summer for the day I arrive, and have to walk around in a suit for ~8 hours.
No, seriously, thanks.
I probably needed a good toxin flushing, and I think I replaced most of the fluid in my body today. Without needing to pee.
So, I'm here. I'm loving it. I'm too lazy to type up details, just be happy for me.

Hello LJ. Long time no Journal.
(Those of you also subscribed to my blog feed will get this twice. Sorry about that.)
Most of you will already know this - if so, move right along :)
As of November the 18th, I'll be resident in Melbourne, Australia.
Summary - Jaiku got bought by Google, and Google doesn't have a lot of need for a freelance, telecommuting sysadmin. I'm still involved for the next wee while at least, but I've known that something along these lines was due to happen for a while, and I've been hunting telecommuting jobs of a similar nature with no luck. While it's plausible that we could have scraped by with bits of piecemeal contracting and photography, it's just not that likely. So, we needed to take some sort of action in a positive direction.
We (that's Marie and I) figured that we could either keep trying until the money ran out, then panic, or do something about it - and the only real something that seems viable is to move to where there's work.
Wellington, as much as we love the place, would feel like a retreat, a backwards step, for both of us. Not appealing. Auckland, while it has its attractions (mostly people we know there), doesn't really appeal as a place to live. So, with those two off the list, that means we're really looking outside NZ.
Melbourne was a place we loved, when there on our honeymoon, with the added bonus of at least some people we know there. The weather, while warmer than here, is still temperate enough to not turn me into a large puddle the first time there's a warmish day.
Also, with around 3.8 million people, there's more work for both of us than anywhere in New Zealand can offer.
So, I've booked a one way ticket, and my first 10 days or so accommodation. Just me to start with; Marie will stay over here and deal with the packing/shifting/selling/storing of our various possessions, and will follow me over early in 2008.
I've had 4 first stage interviews (with agents), and one second interview with the hiring company. Reports back, based on my CV and interviews, incline me towards the belief that I won't have too many issues finding a job. Accommodation is another story, but I'll deal with that after I have a way to pay the rent.
So, that's the news.Current Mood: accomplished

Bad journaler
No biscuit.
Nothing major to say on a personal front - life carries on, no major adventures, no dramas, just the ever-rich tapestry of life (*barf*).
Failed to get a job in Napier that I was keen on - they decided they wanted someone with a Windows focus... which isn't me. Still looking, and thinking as far outside the box as my mind can reach on that score. Plans are roughed out to get there, and get settled, no matter what.
Dimmer gig last night. Loved the act, had to leave early. Reminded of why I stopped going to gigs - the crowds bug me, the utter rudeness of a small minority (often somehow, associated with the band or the venue in some way) of the folk in the audience. In other news, my old bouncer senses are still working fine - I spotted two fights before they got started. By about midnight, my back was sore from standing for so long, so we bailed. Old age is a bitch.
I quit one blogging network (basically, for not giving a fuck, or acting in what I consider to be a professional manner - and they weren't paying well enough for me to put up with that crap), so now I'm hunting more blogging gigs to bring up the income streams a bit.
I need to do more photography. Really. Any model volunteers? Would be for portfolio work, terms are negotiable. Along the lines of digital copies + an 8x10 glossy of your favourite shot would suit me, but if you're interested, let's talk.
My writing, I think, continues to improve. Practice is a good thing. I'm slowly finding my voice, learning how to write in a flow that suits the way I think, and I hope is sufficiently easy to read. I've given up on moderating my vocabulary on the first pass; that's saved for editing, not creation.
Married life continues to Not Suck. No surprises there.
I feel a need for new music, I'm not sure what, or why. I'm open to suggestions. If you're reading this, you probably have some idea of the sort of thing I like.Current Mood: calm Current Music: Ministry - Burning Inside

A wee while back, Mr beagl suggested that a way to keep track of all the places I write stuff would be handy. The 'Compleat Andrew', he called it.
I was considering writing something that would do this, but I'm slack, lazy and slow. Fortunately, sometimes, this pays off, and someone else does all the hard work.
Introducing: http://malach.suprglu.com/. Containing all major weblogs, photos on flickr, and links on del.icio.us. And probably more stuff, as I remember it exists.

There's nothing quite like the virtuous feeling you have when you realise it's not (quite) yet 7am, but you've already gone to the gym for an hour, come home, showered and dressed, and are ready to start the rest of your day.
Now, into the day's work...

OK, I know a lot of you are visual types, and have Firm Opinions on such things.
I'm seeking inspiration.
If you have a favourite Photographer, I'd like a URL if they have one. If you have a favourite photograph, then ditto. If you have a favourite style of photography, then I'd love to hear about it.

| » Mornings |
I've never really been a morning person, so it's kinda surprising to me to be waking up before my alarm goes off at 5am, waiting for it to go off, then getting up and starting work.
See, my routine pretty much requires me to get a couple of hours of stuff done before my day-job. Admitedly, said day-job is only 3 days a week, but I'm better off to commit to a routine wake-up time no matter what the day is. Since I'm only working 24 hours a week, I really need to be more visibly present for those 24 hours than I was for my 40 hours in the last few weeks of work, which means hitting work about 8am, which in turn, means leaving home about 7:45, which means getting in the shower no later than about 7:15. So, if I want a couple of hours of aake and doing stuff before I get up, that means 5am starts.
Still, when I get to work, I feel a lot more awake than I did when I dragged myself awake about 8am, and to work by 9. It also means I get to talk with the denizens of certain IRC channels, and discover strange south american music.
In the evenings after an 8 hour day, I find it harder to get motivated to do any work for myself, easier to be distracted by Tank (BF2) , or City of Villains. I probably need to put some limits around that sort of thing too.
Really, if I could get rid of the need to sleep, I'd be a lot better off. Either that, or bring in enough from y other 2 days a week type worjk that I can give away the day-job. That would be happy-making.
But now, pre-work-prep (aka shower and stuff).

I know a few folks are interested in this sort of thing, so here are some photos from the main event. Huge thanks to Mr Pozz for taking the photos for us. This is a small selection, with very basic post-processing done. Real photos will follow in a week or so.
All images will pop up a bigger version if you click on them.
Yes, that's a very shiny shirt. No, it's not black.
It was windy and kept threatening rain, so we were mostly inside. The view was still pretty spectacular, and even more so if you looked at the bride as well.
After the ceremony, we did the usual 'get a few portrait shots' thing done.
Engagement watch, engagement ring, and two wedding bands. Oh, and Great Nails.
More info and photos will follow in a week or so. For now, we're still on honeymoon-time...

| » 3 weeks. |
OK.
So, last day of work for 3 weeks was today.
This weekend is relaxation, leading into Monday. Monday afternoon, we start getting ready, put the cats into the cattery, that sort of thing. Tuesday is running around, arranging haircuts, manicures, pedicures, the legal part of the wedding thing, and probably a nice dinner somewhere.
Wednesday, we fly to Fiji. Social times with friends and family follow. Saturday afternoon some time, we have the actual wedding. There will be much rejoicing. Sunday is brunch with aforementioned family and friends, followed by a trip to Treasure Island for about 5 nights. Then on to Melbourne, for shopping and socialising, 5 nights again, then on to a Japanese Mountain Retreat for 2 nights. Home on about Friday, married, holiday'd, rested, and about to embark on a new and interesting chapter of life.
Once we get back, M will be leaving her job and retraining as a makeup artist. I'll be dropping down to 3 days a week to work on weblogging, photography, and contract work. Hopefully those will start bringing in a real income, so we've got something we can live on once we shift up to Hawkes Bay, about the end of the year. Switching from wageslave to self employed, from office work to creative work, from Wellington to Napier.
That's the plan, in broad strokes.
Let's see how it turns out...
[edit: OK, I wasn't painfuly uncertain, but the client I was using to post was confused, and adding lots of questionmarks. Fixed, and I promise to not use it again.]

| » Geek, shop, geek, entertain |
So, this morning was get up, and geek - a lot of reading, a bit of writing, and a surprise (to me) tidy up of the office. For some reason, I put something away - then carried on putting things away, and suddenly the office floor was visible, everything that had a home was in it, and almost everything that didn't have a home had one found for it.
I had no idea I was going to do that.
Then there was a wander off to Queensgate (local mall) to buy pants for wedding, shoes for holiday, and pens for moleskine. All successful. We followed that with japanese mall-cuisine, and a trip to the supermarket, since we're entertaining tonight.
The rest of the afternoon was some more writing, a bit more reading, and a bit of City of Villains. It's an interesting enough wee game, and I can see what people enjoy about it. I don't know if I'll stick with it yet, but I don't regret buying it - which is a good start.
Tonight is entertaining. Right now is filling in time until the entertaining s

I'm reorganising the online bits of my life.
This LJ will be where all my personal/life-update stuff goes.
Business/Lifestyle Entrepreneurship stuff will be over at Mutation.
Other sundry geekery including, but not limited to, the so-called web2.0sphere, tech toys, national politics, home/office decor, open source, OS X/Apple, and anything else that's not personal or suitable for Mutation will go over here (currently syndicated as malachblog). If all you care about is my personal stuff, and you're subscribed to that, then you may like to unsub.
I also write for Creative Weblogging on Photography and Enterprise Storage Systems.
Recent photos intermittently go up on Flickr.
Recent bookmarks are up on del.icio.us.
Somewhere, outside all of that, there are bits of my life that aren't online. Unsurprisingly, I can't give you links to those.
So, you poor bastards, you'll be seeing more of me around these parts.

If you add the user 'moonsquid' to your friends list, you'll now get all my blog postings as well.
Isn't that cute?

OK, so, I'm in Auckland.
tonight, I'll be at therapy. If I know you, and you're interested in catching up, that's a damned good place to go to do so.
I'm sure you'll be able to ignore the silly people (i.e. ones you know you dislike) and silly music (ie, tracks you don't like) while doing so...

OK, for those of you that haven't already got this announcement some other way, here it is.
I have a new business, Ergonomic New Zealand.
If something along those lines comes up in casual conversation, it'd be really great if you could mention me... especially if you're in New Zealand.
Many thanks.
